A California assembly member has made headlines by spearheading a move to teach youngsters the difference between breaking and faking news.

Jimmy Gomez has introduced a bill to help high schools teach pupils to tell real news from fake because false stories pose "a direct threat to our democracy".

The Los Angeles Democrat said students should learn reasoning skills to assess what they read online.

The bill would introduce new curriculum standards that include strategies for identifying false stories.

The problem of false reports masquerading as news emerged as a major issue of the 2016 US election, with many shared widely on social media during the campaign.
