Rapper Kanye West has been attacked by a human rights group for performing at a wedding in Kazakhstan, accused of legitimising the human rights violations of the nation's president.

West appeared at the wedding of Nursultan Nazarbayev's grandson on Saturday. The US-based The Human Rights Foundation compared his appearance to a similar visit earlier this year by Jennifer Lopez to Turkmenistan, another country with a history of human rights violations.

HRF president Thor Halvorssen said the Central Asian country was a "human rights wasteland" where entertainers like West would be imprisoned for expressing their views.

The foundation says Mr Nazarbayev curbs political rights and suppresses the media.

West's publicist did not comment.
