Irish design and craftsmanship will be celebrated at a stand-alone exhibition in Barcelona this summer with 24 Irish makers and designers showcasing their work to coincide with the city's Design Week.

The free exhibition will run until July 21 and is a must-see event for anyone travelling to the Catalan city over this summer.

Organised by the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland, the Surface Matters exhibition features new work from 24 Irish entrants selected by an independent jury.

They were all picked to feature in the council's magazine Portfolio Critical Selection showcasing Irish contemporary craft.

Surface Matters takes place at the Centre D'Artesania Catalunya, following a successful run at the Coach House Gallery, Dublin Castle, earlier this year. Showcasing works ranging from wood and glass to metals and ceramics, the exhibition includes names such as renowned leather designer Una Burke, furniture designers Sasha Sykes and Stephen O'Briain and jewellery designer David McCaul.

The Portfolio programme, initially launched in 2005, was developed to actively increase the reputations and potential of designer-makers.
