India PM faces poll wipeout

London Daily Telegraph

Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party has claimed victory in India's general election, according to the first exit polls.

The polls suggested that Mr Modi would be the country's next prime minister with a working majority in parliament – and also predicted a worst-ever defeat for the country's ruling Congress Party.

Exit polls have a chequered history in India after several wrongly predicted defeat for the Congress leda lliance group in the 2004 and 2009 polls. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
