In brief: Woman held over frying pan assault

A New Jersey woman hit a nine-year-old with a frying pan after he dropped a bagel and her dog ate it, police say.

The boy told officers Donna Ambrosio-Ruglio yelled at him that the cream cheese on the bagel would kill the dog. She is being held on $75,000 (€55,300) bail.

'Stupid smoking' damages house

Tenants of a house in the US started a blaze that caused $30,000 (€22,000) in damage after using a hole in the floor as an ashtray.

Oregon Fire and Rescue spokesman Paul Corah said: "That's not careless smoking, that's stupid smoking." No one was injured in the fire.

Famous dog dies in fire on yacht

Chloe, a German shepherd rescued from New York's Hudson River last month after falling off a yacht has died in a fire on the vessel.

Chloe died in the fire at Chelsea Piers in New York. She made headlines when she fell into the river and was trapped under a dock.

Lindsay's lawyer denies theft claim

Lindsay Lohan's lawyer said yesterday that her client did not steal a $2,500 (€1,800) necklace.

"We vehemently deny these allegations and, if charges are filed, we will fight them in court," Shawn Chapman Holley said.

Palin fails in bid to trademark names

Sarah Palin's bid to trademark her name and that of her daughter, Bristol, ran into trouble because the forms were unsigned.

Applications to trademark Sarah Palin and Bristol Palin were filed on November 5 but were quickly slapped down by a trademark examiner.

Walliams to swim length of Thames

'Come Fly With Me' star David Walliams is to swim 200 miles -- along the length of London's River Thames.

The funnyman has previously swum across the English Channel for charity. His challenge is for Sport Relief and will begin in September.
