In brief: Woman gets new face after mauling

AN AMERICAN woman who was mauled by a chimpanzee in 2009 has received a full face transplant, the third surgery of its kind performed in the US.

Charla Nash, from Connecticut, was hurt after a friend's 91kg pet chimpanzee, Travis, went on a rampage. The animal was eventually shot and killed by police.

Crowe says sorry for tweet 'snip-up'

San Francisco's anti-circumcision lobby seems to have a friend in Russell Crowe.

The Oscar-winning actor lashed out at the practice in a series of comments on Twitter. In them, he declared a newborn baby to be perfect on delivery. However, Crowe later withdrew his comments, which he feared may cause offence, and tweeted: "I am very sorry."

Secret snapper caught by police

A 20-year-old man has been arrested in California, accused of planting spyware on dozens of computers to secretly photograph women in a state of undress.

American detectives took Trevor Harwell into custody from his home in Fullerton, where they also found hundreds of thousands of explicit pictures on his computer.

Lightning strikes 77 US cadets

A lightning strike at an American military has resulted in 77 cadets being sent to hospital.

The cadets, enrolled in the US Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, were admitted after a bolt struck during a severe thunderstorm a base spokeswoman said.

Germans last to raise smile in poll

GermanS have been voted the world's "least funny nationality" in a global poll, which names Americans as the funniest and the Spanish the most amusing Europeans.

The social network and dating website asked 30,000 people across 15 countries to name both the "funniest" and "the least funny" nationality.

Man takes ad over partner's abortion

AN AMERICAN man, who said he was upset that his girlfriend had an abortion, bought a billboard and accused her of killing their child.

The billboard shows Greg Fultz holding the outline of a baby and reads: "This would have been a picture of my two-month-old baby if the mother had decided to not kill our child!"
