In brief: Earthquake hits island of Crete
A strong earthquake struck the island of Crete yesterday, rattling buildings as far away as Egypt and Turkey.
The epicentre of the 6.2 magnitude quake was off the coast of Ierapetra, a town on the southern coast. The quake was felt as far away as Cairo across the Mediterranean Sea, and it also caused panic in the Turkish resorts of Bodrum, Fethiye and Marmaris, but there were no reports of fatalities.
Bank robber with Obama mask held
Austrian authorities have arrested a man suspected of robbing a series of banks while wearing a Barack Obama mask.
The 45-year-old German is suspected of carrying out seven heists since 2008. He was taken into custody after a police dog found a bag containing the mask, a weapon and the latest haul.
Two skydivers die after air collision
Two experienced skydivers fell hundreds of feet to their deaths after colliding over an airport in California.
The men's parachutes collided and deflated 300ft to 400ft in the air sending both men hurtling to the ground. Patrick James McGowan and Christopher David Stasky, both 42, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Merkel recovering from knee surgery
German Chancellor Angela Merkel was recovering last night after undergoing surgery on her knee.
Her spokesman Steffen Seibert said she had surgery on the meniscus, a cartilage pad inside the knee. He did not specify which knee.

Teacher in trouble over online posts
A New Jersey first class teacher was suspended yesterday after parents complained that she had posted derogatory comments about her young students on her Facebook page.
The teacher wrote about feeling like "a warden" and referred to her pupils as future criminals. The teacher was removed after parents asked that their children be taken out of her class.
