In brief: Celine Dion has twins after IVF

CELINE Dion has given birth to twin boys, finally realising her dream of being a mother again after a long struggle to become pregnant.

The 42-year-old superstar singer reportedly had the boys on Saturday in Florida, US. No names have yet been announced.Dion, who also has a nine-year-old son, has spoken openly about her difficulties in getting pregnant and underwent several rounds of IVF.

Iran helps Karzai to pay off Taliban

IRANIAN officials have been handing bundles of cash to Hamid Karzai's chief of staff as part of an effort to gain influence in Afghanistan and sideline Nato, according to sources in Kabul.

The payments go into a secret fund used by Umar Daudzai and Mr Karzai, the Afghan president, to pay politicians, tribal elders and even Taliban commanders to secure loyalty, the report said.

iPhones on Santa lists for Christmas

Children are turning their backs on traditional toys at Christmas in favour of the latest hi-tech gadgets, a new study has suggested.

A breakdown of the top 10 most-wanted toys among children aged five to 16 revealed a grown-up taste in gifts, with Apple products, including the iPhone 4, iPod Touch and iPad dominating the top three places.

Sherpa missing after avalanche

A veteran Sherpa guide who has scaled Mount Everest 19 times and another guide are reportedly missing after an avalanche hit them while they were climbing a smaller Himalayan peak.

The accident occurred at an altitude of 7,045 metres, it was reported.

The other members of the team dug in the snow but were unable to find the missing climbers.

Child dies as 11 'leap from devil'

A TWO-YEAR-OLD child died and 10 other people were injured when they jumped from the second-story window of a suburban Paris apartment building.

They were of African origin, possibly from Angola, and an initial investigation suggested they jumped after one of the women involved became hysterical and started shouting that she'd seen the devil, a local official said.
