In brief: Amy Winehouse checks into rehab

Troubled singer Amy Winehouse is being treated at the Priory clinic, her spokesman said yesterday.

He said the 27-year-old was at the London clinic on "doctor's advice". The Priory offers treatment for a range of psychiatric problems, as well as drug and alcohol addiction.

Public-loo buyer feeling flush

A seafront toilet block in the UK has been sold at auction for €120,000.

The two-storey building in Sheringham, Norfolk, had been expected to fetch between €35,000 and €60,000. Auction House East Anglia said the buyer was a "builder specialising in unusual buildings" who planned to develop it for his family.

Soldier laid to rest after 60-year hunt

A US soldier has finally been laid to rest, 60 years after his death in the Korean War.

Artie Hodapp's family agonised for decades over the mystery of where he had died. It was established, through a review of army reports, that he had starved to death in a PoW camp. He was buried in a cemetery in Illinois this week.

French metro pop riles Flemings

THE operator of Brussels' metro service has ruled out playing French music at its stations after an experiment drew complaints from Flemish-speaking Belgians.

The metro operator decided in 2005 to pipe pop hits at the city's 69 metro stops, but felt French or Flemish songs might irritate rival communities in the linguistically divided country. A new experiment has confirmed its view.

WARNING to pedestrians -- walking down the street in Florida could be hazardous to your health.

Several major cities in the state took the top spots on a list, published this week, of the most dangerous metropolitan areas for US pedestrians.

Policeman dies in funeral crash

A SOUTHERN California motorcycle officer died after a freak accident during a police funeral procession.

Andrew Garton (44), of the Hawthorne Police Department, and another officer from the El Segundo Police Department were riding close together when their motorcycles collided and Mr Garton was thrown into the path of oncoming traffic.
