Handbag 'bribe'

A FORMER Spanish mayor has been accused of accepting a luxury-brand handbag from a businessman as a bribe in connection with a corruption network affecting the PP, the country's ruling political party.

Ana Hermoso will go on trial for accepting a bag from Jesús Calvo Soria before pledging her vote while a councillor in a censure motion against the Socialist mayor of Bormujos, a town near Seville.

Mr Calvo is accused of money laundering, tax fraud, influence peddling and accepting bribes.

Road rage shooting

Police in the US state of New Mexico are searching for a suspect in an apparent road rage shooting that left a four-year-old girl dead.

The father of the young girl told police that an enraged driver pulled alongside his car and began to fire a weapon at the vehicle. The shooting took place in rush-hour traffic on Tuesday.

Police arrived on the scene moments later to find that the girl had been shot, while her mother and father were uninjured. The girl was rushed to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Fresher fruit

Tesco is to sell salad and citrus fruit that it claims will stay fresh for up to two days longer under an initiative to cut food waste.

The UK's biggest supermarket has announced it is to ship produce from European suppliers directly to its stores after cutting out a food packing stage within its supply chain.

It said the initiative would cut the amount of time produce spent in transit, meaning shoppers would have up to two days longer to eat items such as lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers after buying them.

Fatal plane crash

British police said one person was killed when a military jet crashed yesterday near an air base. The US Embassy in London said the plane was a supersonic F-18, and the air force said it was investigating.

Cambridgeshire Police said the plane took off from the Lakenheath air base.

Apology for Cilla jibe

ITV has apologised after airing an episode of 'You've Been Framed' that featured a red-haired woman hitting her head on the side of a swimming pool, which the presenter dubbed "Cilla Black's final show for ITV, called Cilla's Super Splashdown".

Black died earlier this year when she fell and hit her head in the grounds of her Spanish villa.
