Gunman kills eight in rampage
A GUNMAN went on a house-to-house killing spree and shot dead eight neighbours before being beaten to death by survivors in a small village in Lithuania, police said yesterday.
The dead, aged between 17 and 65, were four men and four women.
The massacre took place in a village some 50 km north of the capital Vilnius.
Police named the gunman as Leonard Zavistanovich (58).
The gunman, armed with two hunting rifles, went to four houses in Drauchiu at around 5pm on Sunday.
He killed seven of the inhabitants, shooting each person once in the head or the chest, police said. Only two inhabitants were left alive, one of them his mother. The gunman then fired on four people returning from a nearby forest, killing one and lightly injuring another.
The other two attacked Zavistanovich, seized his rifles and beat him so badly he died later.
Last September in neighbouring Latvia, seven people were gunned down in a feud over property.
