An Indian court has sentenced to death three men who raped a photojournalist last year in the city of Mumbai.

A fourth defendant was sentenced to life in prison, prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said yesterday. He said he asked for the death sentence under a strict anti-rape law introduced following public outrage over a fatal gang rape in New Delhi in 2012. "This is the first case in India in which the death penalty has been given to convicts while the victim is alive," Mr Nikam said.

DEAD BODY BLUNDER

A front-desk clerk at a Florida apartment complex has been fired after mistaking the body of a tenant for a mannequin and throwing it in a trash bin.

Ronald Benjamin (61) told police he saw the body in the car park of the building and assumed someone put a mannequin there as an April Fool's Day prank. He got two people to help him toss the body in the garbage. A maintenance worker saw the body and called authorities. Police say the body was that of a 96-year-old woman who jumped from her balcony.

The state legislature's judiciary committee voted 35-3 against Charla Nash's request.

SLUM SKYSCRAPER

It boasts a helicopter landing pad, glorious views and large balconies.

Yet a 45-storey skyscraper in the centre of Venezuela's capital Caracas is no five-star hotel: it is a slum, probably the tallest in the world.
