German 'Mandela' gets presidency

Germany's government and the two major opposition parties have agreed to jointly nominate former East German human rights activist Joachim Gauck to be the country's next president.

Mr Gauck (72), who has been called "Germany's answer to Nelson Mandela", is a former Lutheran priest who opposed East Germany's then-communist regime.

Thrifty pensioner had secret fortune

Six women are set to benefit from the generosity of a thrifty pensioner who has left behind a £250,000 (€299,000) fortune after a lifetime of scrimping.

Diet soft drinks worse for heart

Diet soft drinks may benefit the waistline, but people who drink it every day may have a heightened risk of heart attack and stroke, according to a new US study.

The researchers, whose work appeared in the 'Journal of General Internal Medicine', found that older adults who drank diet soda every day were 44pc more likely to suffer a heart attack.

Take That star Gary Barlow is to be a father for the fourth time.

The 41-year-old singer and 'X Factor' judge announced the news yesterday after his wife Dawn, a 42-year-old dancer, had her three-month pregnancy scan.
