A man who was caught on camera punching his three-year-old son so hard it knocked him off his feet has been released on bail.

Justin Whittington (23) was arrested on Friday and charged with child endangerment after footage of his sickening act was handed in to police by supermarket owner Harry Dindral.

The California store’s CCTV system filmed the 23-year-old chasing the boy through the shop before the toddler stops and raises his arms to defend himself.

With no one else around, Mr Whittington lunges forward and punches the 3-year-old in the face.

He then drags him along the floor by his feet before pushing him away when a pregnant woman, believed to be the child’s mother and Mr Whittington’s partner, takes the crying boy by the hand and leads him away.

The pair walked out of the supermarket while Mr Whittington heads in the other direction.

The child was checked over by paramedics soon after the violent incident and was deemed not to need hospital attention.

Originally set at $1 million (€940,000), Mr Whittington was released after it was dropped to $20,000 (€18,800).

He is to appear in court on April 24.
