A 94-year-old woman has died after reportedly falling backwards on an escalator in a Marks & Spencer store.

Emergency services rushed to the retail giant's shop in Sutton, south London, after what the company said was a "tragic customer accident".

The pensioner is reported to have hit her head in M&S in the High Street shortly after 3.30pm on Monday.

An M&S spokesman said: "The emergency services were called to our Sutton store yesterday afternoon following a tragic customer accident. We responded immediately by calling the emergency services and attending to the customer's immediate needs.

"The London Ambulance Service arrived within minutes of being called and offered their full support. Our thoughts are with her family at this tragic time."

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said it was called to the store at 3.37pm on Monday and a crew arrived within six minutes.

She added: "Sadly, despite the extensive efforts of our crew, a woman died at the scene."
