An 18-year-old woman is fighting for her life in hospital after the car she was travelling in collided with a pony which died at the scene.

The teenager was a passenger in a VW Polo travelling through the New Forest, on the A35 near Holmsley, Hampshire, when the crash happened at around 11.15pm on Wednesday.

It is believed the pony escaped on to the road through a gate that may have been left open by a member of the public, Hampshire Constabulary said.

The unnamed teenager, from Brockenhurst, suffered "life-threatening injuries" and was taken by ambulance to hospital, police said. Her next of kin have been told.

The driver and another passenger, both women aged 18, were not injured in the crash which led to road closures lasting more than five hours.
