Sixth child in Derby house fire tragedy battling for his life

David Wilcock in London

A FIRE which killed five young brothers and sisters is likely to claim its sixth victim after police said their critically ill teenage brother was "unlikely to survive".

Schoolboy Duwayne Philpott (13) has been in hospital since the blaze which claimed the lives of his sister Jade (10), and brothers John (9), Jack (7), Jessie (6), and five-year-old Jayden last Friday.

He is currently at Birmingham Children's Hospital but is expected to die from injuries received in the fire at the family home in Derby, Derbyshire Police said.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Cotterill said: "Duwayne suffered serious injuries in the fire; tragically he is unlikely to survive. Mr and Mrs Philpott remain at their son's bedside and my thoughts are with them at this distressing time.

"The family has asked for privacy at this time as they come to terms with the events of Friday and the loss of their children."

The children were asleep in their beds upstairs in the house in Victory Road, Allenton, Derby, when the fire broke out at the semi-detached house in the early hours of the morning.

Valiant

The children's father, Mick Philpott, made a "valiant" attempt to save them, according to the police.

A 28-year-old woman and 38-year-old man, both from Derby, were arrested by officers investigating the deaths but were yesterday released without charge. Police said they were are still treating the fire as suspicious.

ACC Cotterill added: "This investigation is still at an early stage and it should be stressed that we have not yet had the opportunity to speak to Mr and Mrs Philpott properly because they've been caring for their son in Birmingham."

"I want to thank the local community who have already come forward but I would urge anyone with any information, regardless of how insignificant you think it may be, to contact us."
