Silvio wouldn't be in court if he was gay – Putin

London Daily Telegraph

Silvio Berlusconi's personal life would never have become a scandal and ended up in the courts had he been gay, his friend Vladimir Putin has said.

"Berlusconi is being tried because he lives with women," said the Russian president. "If he was homosexual, no one would have lifted a finger against him." Mr Berlusconi is almost sure to be stripped of his seat in the senate in the coming weeks, after being convicted of massive tax fraud last month.

Mr Putin (60) made the remarks, which provoked laughter from his audience, at the Valdai Club, a Kremlin-backed international discussion forum.

He also criticised any liberalisation of laws on gay marriage and same-sex couples. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
