Silvio hands rivals victory on a plate
Candidates for the party of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi have been barred from standing in crucial regional elections after a member of staff missed the midday deadline to register when he nipped out for a sandwich.
The blunder happened when the People of Freedom Party had to submit its list of candidates for the key region of Lazio, which includes Rome.
Alfredo Milioni missed the deadline and was barred from submitting the list by electoral officers.
Mr Berlusconi (73) was said to have been "furious" at the mistake, which could hand victory to the Left-wing opposition in one of Italy's most important regions.
