Search for boy (12) missing off Welsh coast called off due to darkness

The search for a 12-year-old boy missing off the coast of north-west coast of Wales has been called off this evening due to darkness.

The search began today at lunchtime after the boy was playing in the water with a friend and was swept out to sea, BBC News reports.

An air and sea search by RNLI and helicopter crews struggled with ‘horrendous’ visibility and rough seas today.

Anglesey coastguard manager told BBC News said it was understood the father of one of the boys managed to grab him while the grandfather tried to grab the other child.

He said: "The grandfather went in to rescue the other lad and a wave swept over. He managed to grab the rocks but lost grip of the child that is missing."

A lifeboat was launched within three minutes of the alarm being raised.

The search included three lifeboats, two coastguard rescue teams and a shoreline search team.
