Schmidt stashes away his favourite menthols

London Daily Telegraph

One of the grandest of Europe's statesman, former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, has hoarded 38,000 cigarettes in a bid to beat an EU menthol ban on flavoured tobacco products.

Mr Schmidt (94), widely venerated in Brussels as a founding father of the European project, is said to have stocked up on 200 cartons of his favourite smokes ahead of a looming EU ban on menthol cigarettes. He is also believed to have a stash of old-style incandescent light bulbs – also banned by the EU and replaced by greener bulbs (© Daily Telegraph, London)
