An Italian pensioner was saved from a deadly house fire when her pet cats pounced to her rescue.

The three heroic felines managed to wake 84-year-old Mariangela Banchero as her home in the small fishing village of Camogli went up in flames.

As smoke threatened to overwhelm the building, the cats leapt into action and jump up on their owner to wake her.

Ms Banchero told the Ruptly news agency she initially ignored the “chorus of meows” from the quick-thinking felines but that their insistence she get up alerted her to the danger.

Realising something was wrong, the 84-year-old called for her nephew for help and together, along with the three cats, they managed to get out of the house moments before the floor collapsed in.

“The lady told us that she woke up and tried to go upstairs, but there was a lot of smoke, so she went out and called the nephew to ask for help,” said neighbour Maurizio, who told Ruptly that within minutes the house was shallow up by the flames.

Emergency services later arrived and put out the fire.

Italian police said an investigation was underway to determined the cause of the blaze.
