A primary school has been evacuated following the discovery of a suspicious package nearby, police said.

Officers were informed of the package in York Road near St Sidwell Street, Exeter, Devon, at 6.55 this morning.

Police attended the scene and discovered the package on the junction between Well Street and York Street.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "St Sidwell's School has been evacuated and closed as a precaution.

"The school has plans in place for this type of event.

"Road closures at York Road at both the Sidwell Street and Longbrook Street entrances.

"People are asked to avoid the area."

A message on St Sidwell's School website said: "School is closed today (Monday) due to unforeseen circumstances--we hope to be open tomorrow".
