Pressure mounting for decision to act on Guantanamo

THE British government is considering making a public plea for the release of Shaker Aamer, the only British resident still held in the Guantanamo Bay prison camp.

Britain's foreign secretary William Hague has made it clear in private to his United States counterparts that he would like to see Aamer, who was cleared for transfer out of the base in June 2007, returned to Britain to face justice there.

Of the 166 men now being held in the camp in Cuba, 86 have been cleared for transfer or release. Jane Ellison, MP for Aamer's south London constituency of Battersea, said she had met with Mr Hague last week and she had discussed a public call for a transfer.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "Aamer's case remains a high priority for the UK government and we continue to make clear to the US that we want him released and returned to the UK as a matter of urgency." (© Daily Telegraph, London)
