A baby's body has been found concealed in bushes in a village near Oxford.

The child was found by a member of the public near a footpath in Marston at around 9.20am on Monday, and police are treating the death as unexplained.

The 999 call handler reported that the child's body was found wrapped in a black bag, off the path in bushes.

Officers are trying to trace the baby's mother, who they have urged to come forward. They have not yet confirmed the age of the baby or its gender.

Detective Inspector Jim Holmes from Thames Valley Police said: "This investigation is in its very early stages and officers are working to trace the mother of the child as she may require urgent medical attention.

"If you are the mother of the baby, please come forward so that we can ensure any appropriate help needed can be provided. Likewise if you are a friend or family member of the mother, please come forward so we can check on her welfare.

"The death is being treated as unexplained at this time."

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 9.25am reporting that a baby had been found just off a footpath in Edgeway Road.

"We sent our enhanced care response unit car and an ambulance. Unfortunately the baby was pronounced deceased at the scene."
