Police investigate claims of rape in Wimbledon queue
A man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Police are investigating allegations that a woman was raped in the makeshift campsite erected in the queue for Wimbledon final tickets on Sunday.
Scotland Yard said a 30-year-old man was arrested and bailed over the attack, which is believed to have occurred amid dozens of tens set up in Wimbledon Park by tennis fans eager to get a glimpse of the Men’s Singles final.
A spokesman for the force said: “Police are investigating an allegation of serious sexual assault in Wimbledon Park, off Church Road, in the early hours of Sunday July 7.
“A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and has been taken into custody at a south London police station. He was bailed until early September pending further enquiries.”
He added that the 34-year-old victim is being cared for by specialist teams and confirmed inquiries are ongoing to “establish the circumstances of the incident”.
There were record queues during this year’s tournament with upto 2,000 fans lining up each day for the 500 tickets that were available for Centre Court, Court One and Court Two.
