Parents are found dead after girl left on hire boat

Hannah Furness in London

THE bodies of a couple were found last night in a river after their 13-year-old daughter was discovered alone on a riverboat.

The pair, the girl's mother and stepfather, were found dead by police yesterday afternoon after an extensive search of the River Bure in Norfolk.

The deaths are being treated as unexplained, and officers are not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.

Divers spent yesterday searching a mile-long section of the river after the family failed to return their 38ft-long hire boat on Saturday.

It was found moored to a tree in a remote area with the girl abandoned but uninjured.

They are understood to have removed items including a blood-stained sheet from the boat.

Local residents yesterday speculated that the couple may have left the boat deliberately to seek help after it broke down.

Det Supt Pete Hornby said: "We are in the early stages of our investigation and working to establish the sequence of events which led to this tragic outcome."

Local countryside ranger Tobi Baker said: "The spot where the boat was tied up is very isolated.

"There is no path so it is impossible to jump off and walk anywhere. "You can't tie your boat up and walk to the pub. There is nowhere nearby." (© Daily Telegraph, London)
