Manchester Airport evacuated over suspect bag
The departure area of an airport terminal has been evacuated while bomb disposal experts examine a suspicious bag.
The alarm was raised at Manchester Airport's Terminal 1 shortly after 8.30am today when security officials became concerned about the bag being carried by a male passenger.
Police said the passenger is being interviewed.
Superintendent Phil Davies, police commander at the airport, said: "We were alerted to a suspicious device and as a precaution have evacuated Terminal 1.
"This is not a decision that is taken lightly but the safety of passengers and staff is our primary concern.
"We are working as quickly as possible to resolve this situation without compromising our ongoing work.
"I must stress that at this time the item is being treated as a suspicious device and nothing more."
An airport spokesman said the arrivals area at Terminal 1 remains open and that passengers with flights due to leave the terminal today were still being advised to come to the airport.
