An 86-year-old man is suspected of shooting dead his 81-year-old wife in front of elderly residents in a seaside care home.

Rita King was allegedly shot dead in a communal area of the luxury De La Mer home in coastal Essex.

A man understood to be her husband was being questioned by murder detectives yesterday after the horrifying incident.

The couple were residents in the home, which specialises in caring for people with dementia.

Neighbours said security was tight at the home in Walton-on-the-Naze, and questioned how an elderly man came to have a gun.

Local UKIP MP Douglas Carswell said families would expect their elderly relatives to be safe in a care home.

The octogenarian suspect allegedly shot Mrs King with a revolver around 9am before staff disarmed him and locked away the weapon.

The woman was declared dead at the scene. Police have declined to say what kind of revolver it was, but neighbours have speculated whether it was a wartime pistol. (© Daily Telegraph)
