Man in court for stalking X Factor mum

A man has appeared in court after allegedly stalking the mother of X Factor winner Joe McElderry.

Eileen Joyce complained to police that she was followed by a suspicious man at Asda supermarket in her home town South Shields, South Tyneside, on Christmas Eve.

Northumbria Police said Ennis McBride, 52, was arrested and charged with harassment.

He appeared before South Tyneside Magistrates' Court on St Stephen's Day and was bailed until February. No pleas were entered.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Ennis McBridehas been charged with harassment.

"He was due to appear before South Tyneside Magistrates' Court on Boxing Day.

"It relates to a report of a suspicious man in Asda in South Shields on Christmas Eve."

McElderry won the X Factor in 2009 and has gone on to win ITV's Popstar To Operastar.
