A man accused of strangling an older woman to death after meeting her on a dating website has appeared in court charged with her murder.

Miles Donnelly, 34, allegedly repeatedly stabbed and asphyxiated 44-year-old Usha Patel at the home she shared with her five-year-old son in Melrose Avenue, Cricklewood, on October 8.

The defendant, of Hall Place, Paddington, west London, is also accused of assaulting another woman causing her actual bodily harm, the following day.

Bearded Donnelly made his first appearance at the Old Bailey via video link from Wormwood Scrubs dressed in a grey sweatshirt.

He spoke only to confirm his name before Recorder of London Nicholas Hilliard QC set a provisional timetable for the case.

Donnelly was remanded in custody until a plea and case management hearing on January 4 next year with a two-week trial fixed for February 17.
