Madonna supports Pussy Riot

Madonna has voiced hope that three feminist Russian rockers on trial for performing a "punk prayer" against Vladimir Putin will be released soon.

The pop star said during her concert tour of Russia that she supported freedom of speech.

"I'm against censorship, so I hope that the judge is lenient with them," she said.

Two weeks before Mr Putin's return to the presidency in March's election, the three members of the Pussy Riot band high-kicked and danced in Moscow's main cathedral while singing "Virgin Mary, drive Putin away!"

The women -- Nadezhda Tolokonnikova (23), Maria Alekhina (24) and Yekaterina Samutsevich (29) -- have been in custody for five months.

The band members, who are facing a seven-year sentence if convicted, previously complained they have been deprived of sleep and food.
