Longest tunnel in world close to completion

Nick Squires in Rome

AFTER 14 years of drilling under the Swiss Alps, engineers are finally poised to create the world's longest railway tunnel.

The 35.4-mile Gotthard Tunnel will speed up connections between northern Europe and Italy, supplanting Japan's 33.5-mile Seikan Tunnel as the world's longest.

Only six feet separates the tunnelling teams, with a breakthrough scheduled for Friday. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
