Little boy (4) holidaying with parents in Spanish resort drowns in pool
A four-year-old British boy has drowned in a pool in Spain.
The little boy was dead when emergency services arrived at the holiday development in Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca on Wednesday evening, local authorities confirmed.
It is thought the boy and his parents had only recently arrived on their holiday to the seaside city, south of Alicante.
A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "Following the death of a British national in Spain, we are providing support to their family. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."
There are several holiday apartment blocks, some privately owned and some rented, at the Rocio del Mar complex where the tragic incident happened, a representative from a local estate agent said.
Lupita Diaz, commercial advisor for Mahersol Group which manages apartments at one of the blocks, said there is one pool at the resort and it had just reopened last week after a period of maintenance over the winter period.
Ms Diaz said: "The pool had been closed over the winter. Tiles were changed or there was some kind of maintenance and it had just opened again.
"The area is very popular with tourists, many families. The beach is just 100 metres away."
There are also a number of private villas in the area with pools, Ms Diaz said, adding that it is unclear where exactly the incident happened.
