The EU has condemned Italy for its treatment of refugees after video footage emerged of naked asylum seekers being hosed with disinfectant on the island of Lampedusa.

Giusy Nicolini, the mayor of the island, which lies closer to North Africa than to Italy, said the images reminded her of a concentration camp.

The Italian government has opened an investigation, with Enrico Letta, the prime minister, saying he was "shocked" by the footage, shot by a Syrian refugee. "The government will conduct an in-depth inquiry and will take to task whoever is responsible," Mr Letta said.
