Former Ireland star Gary Breen said it was "a great honour" that a song in his name is now one of the Green Army's most popular anthems.

'A Team of Gary Breens' has now echoed around Paris and Bordeaux alongside such other great Irish football chants as 'Ole, Ole, OIe' and 'Come On You Boys In Green.'

"It is something I never expected," the footballer told

"It was a great honour to play for Ireland but it is something very special when you hear your name being mentioned in that song."

"But it is also all about enjoying the whole football experience, meeting other fans and supporting the team."

Gary visited Bordeaux as part of a Spar promotion where he was accompanied by more than 20 fans who won a trip to Euro 16 by using Gary Breen masks at supermarkets and then creating their own unique selfies.

The fans, accompanied by Gary, flew to Bordeaux from Dublin and enjoyed a pint at Casey's Pub, off Place Gambetta, before being taken to the match at the brand new Bordeaux Girondins stadium.

Gary now takes in Irish matches as often as he can.

"When you are playing, you are focussed on the next match. So you don't really get to enjoy the wider experience."

"I love going to matches as a fan because you get to enjoy the whole package and all the fun that goes with it."

Gary said he is also hopeful that Ireland, the Green Army and their 'Team of Gary Breens' chant will last in Euro 16 beyond their final group game against Italy in Lille.
