Hollande vows to fight Californian ban on foie gras

French President Francois Hollande has promised to fight a ban on foie gras in California, saying it goes against the principles of free trade.

On July 1, a law came into effect in the US state forbidding the production and sale of the delicacy on the basis of animal cruelty.

Speaking on Saturday at a foie gras farm in Monlezun, south-west France, Mr Hollande said there was no reason to limit trade of a product which adhered to EU sanitary regulations and "respects the norms for animal comfort".

France makes some 16 million tons of foie gras annually, and many there worry an anti-foie gras trend could spread. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
