Gunman's mother 'stunned' by shootings
The mother of Derrick Bird is "stunned" by what has happened, a relative said today.
Joy Ryan, who lives in Rowrah, said: "I saw her yesterday and she was just stunned.
"She just couldn't make sense of it. She kept saying she wanted to talk to them, she wanted to talk to her sons."
Mrs Ryan said Mary Bird was distraught and had moved out of her home as she tried to come to terms with the deaths of her twin sons, David and Derrick.
Mrs Ryan said she watched with disbelief when her cousin was named on the news as the gunman responsible for 12 deaths.
She said: "He was a quiet man and just normal.
"He would say hello to you if he saw you and chat to you.
"The first I heard was that someone with a gun was going mad in Whitehaven and the news said it was Derrick Bird and I just thought it must have been somebody else."
