AS THE name tag suggests, this is 'Future Astronaut Bob Geldof'.

From Boomtown Rat to Space cadet, the rocker is set to make history by becoming the first Irishman to travel into space.

The 61-year-old has forked out a cool $100,000 (€74,000) on a ticket for the inaugural Space Expedition Corporation (SXC) commercial flight, which is expected to fly in early 2015.

He joins other celebrity passengers who have signed up for the flight, which will reach an altitude of about 100km (62 miles) from a launch pad on the Caribbean island of Curacao.

Geldof was in Holland yesterday where he took part in the first training sessions for the mission in a space-flight simulator.

His expression changed from cool and calm to one of mild panic as he was strapped into the machine.

Other celebrities who have reportedly signed up include Victoria's Secret lingerie model Doutzen Kroes.

But each wealthy astronaut will make the journey separately as the Lynx Mark II spaceship has room for only two people, including the pilot.
