Greek police foil parcel bomb attacks on three embassies
Four parcel bomb attacks -- allegedly targeting French president Nicolas Sarkozy and three embassies -- were foiled by Greek police yesterday after one of the devices exploded at a delivery service.
Motorcycle police later detained two Greek men, aged 22 and 24, several hundred yards from the blast site in central Athens. The men were carrying handguns and bullets in waist pouches, and one of them wore a bulletproof vest, a wig and a baseball cap.
Domestic political extremists are suspected, and one of the two men detained had been wanted in connection with a Greek radical anarchist group.
No link was made with the Yemen-based mail bomb plot.
Parts of Athens city centre were cordoned off for more than an hour as the three bombs, found at a different delivery service and in the suspects' backpacks, were defused.
