Germans want EU's power to be diluted
German voters back efforts to decentralise powers from Brussels to EU member states or regions by a margin of two to one, a poll has found.
Some 50pc were in favour of such a change and 26pc against. A majority wanted Britain to remain in the EU, but most regarded France as their most important ally.
A spokesman for Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, has described the repatriation of powers, a key objective of British diplomacy, as "a sensible idea".
Some 60pc said decisions over criminal justice should be made nationally.
Just over half thought decisions on migration within the EU should be too, the YouGov Deutschland poll for Open Europe, a think tank, found. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
