Gang fractured mother's skull while she was giving birth
British police are hunting a gang who attacked a woman with baseball bats and a knife while she was giving birth.
The 22-year-old victim, who has not been named, was about to go to hospital when the masked men burst into her home in Basildon, Essex.
She suffered a fractured skull and other injuries - but gave birth to a healthy baby after being taken to the town's hospital.
Her partner has said the experience had "tainted" a special time for the family.
He issued a statement saying: "This was an extremely traumatic experience for us both.
"My girlfriend remains in hospital with a serious head injury when she should be celebrating the birth of our child. Please help the police to catch these men whose actions have tainted a period of time which should be a happy one for us."
An Essex Police spokeswoman said officers were called to the house in Beambridge at about 9pm on Monday.
Five men armed with crowbars had smashed their way into the premises and assaulted the couple before leaving the scene on foot.
Detective Inspector Joel Henderson said: "This was a shocking attack on a young woman who was in labour.
"It is vital we get those people responsible off the streets of Basildon. I would ask anyone with information that could help this investigation to get in touch."
Police described the suspects as being in their 20s. One was white, about 5ft 7in tall, of medium build, aged 25 to 30, with short, dark, cropped hair and a pronounced jawline.
A second was described as black, around 6ft tall, with a skinny build.
Cash and an Apple iPad were stolen. (© Independent News Service)
