French students cause stir in veil and hotpants
TWO French female students have made a film of themselves strolling through the streets of Paris in niqabs and mini-shorts, intended as a critique of France's recently passed law, which bans the veil.
Calling themselves the 'Niqabitches', the veiled women can be seen strutting past governmental offices wearing the religious garments, which covers the whole face except for a small eye-slit, with their long legs naked bar black high heels.
Bemused passers-by can be seen gawping at the pair or asking to take photographs. In an opinion piece, published on the news website rue89.com, the anonymous duo -- political science and communication students -- said the film was a tongue-in-cheek way of criticising France's niqab ban.
"To put a burka on would have been too simple. So we asked ourselves: 'how would the authorities react when faced with women wearing a burka and mini-shorts?'" the students, one of whom is a Muslim, said.
France's five-million-strong Muslim community is Western Europe's largest. The law is due to come into force early next year but could yet be overturned by France's constitutional court.
