Four young people killed as balcony collapses during housewarming party in France
Four people were killed and 14 injured when a balcony collapsed in Angers, western France, during a housewarming party, local authorities and media said.
Authorities in the Maine-et-Loire region said the accident occurred late on Saturday night, when a balcony on the third floor of the recently constructed building gave way.
They said four people were killed.
The Angers prefecture says the accident happened Saturday night at an apartment in a recently constructed building. They say one of the injured is in serious condition.
A spokesman for the city's University Hospital said 10 people injured in the accident were admitted, one of whom was in a serious condition. Another four were treated at a clinic.
The Ouest France newspaper said the people standing on the balcony were young, and enjoying a housewarming party.
The duty manager at the hospital, Michel Pichon, told France Info radio that all the injured "were about 20 years old, certainly students".
