The first millionaire winner of new game show Red or Black? has served time in prison for attacking another man, it was reported today.
Nathan Hageman picked up £1 million on the roulette-themed show on Saturday.
Today's Sun and Daily Mirror newspapers reported that Mr Hageman, a 31-year-old bricklayer from Reading, was jailed for five years for attacking his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend after breaking into his flat.
Mr Hageman told The Sun that he had started getting threatening calls from a man in Reading.
"I tried to brush it off but he kept saying he was going to harm me. One night he told me my address and said he was going to come round and batter me in front of my mum and niece Mya, who was only about two."
Mr Hageman said he asked the police to help, but was told only to let them know if matters became more serious.
He took matters into his own hands and one night went round to the man's house, broke in, and beat him up.
He said: "I was an idiot for doing it, I know, but that's the state of mind I was in.
"He wasn't seriously hurt, but he made a complaint and I was arrested. I was charged with aggravated burglary and ABH. I pleaded guilty straight away as I knew what I'd done was wrong. I got five years."
He served two and a half years in HMP Bullingdon in Oxfordshire before being released in 2009, the newspaper said.
He was put on licence for the remainder of his term, which expired just before he applied to be on the programme this year.
A spokesman for the organisation Media Watch told the Mirror: "It is staggering they knew about his past and still allowed him on the show. What message does this send to victims of crime?"
An ITV spokesman told the newspapers: "We were aware Nathan has served a two and a half-year sentence in prison."
