Euro vital for prosperity, Merkel tells voters
German Chancellor Angela Merkel defended the euro and European freedoms yesterday by telling potential voters in her campaign for re-election that it had secured German jobs and prosperity.
Speaking in Dresden, she said: "Europe has 500 million inhabitants, 7pc of the world's population. These 7pc produce a quarter of what the world produces.
"These 7pc receive 50pc of social security benefits, half of all welfare spending. That is our social market economy.
"To keep that, we must stay competitive, must stay strong. If we don't, we can't have all this. Other countries aren't sleeping – not China, not India, not Brazil."
Mrs Merkel added: "The euro secures our jobs, secures our prosperity – 50pc of our exports are in the eurozone, 60pc of our exports are in the EU".
She is expected to win next Sunday's election. A Forsa poll last week had her Christian Democrat Party on 39pc and coalition partners the Free Democrats on 6pc.
The opposition SPD were on 25pc and their allies the Greens on 9pc. (©Daily Telegraph, London)
