The French Government says EU leaders are considering imposing sanctions against Russia due to the conflict in Georgia.
Russian soldiers are continuing to occupy several areas of Georgian territory following the recent outbreak of hostilities, despite agreeing to pull back as part of a ceasefire deal.
It says its continued presence is needed to protect Russian citizens in the breakaway Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Ankhazia.
French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said today that the EU was considering imposing sanctions on Russia due to the situation, but he did not provide any further details.
