Dietician to the stars sues rival over 'ineffective' claim
FRENCH weight-loss guru Dr Pierre Dukan is suing a rival dietitian for libel after his protein-rich regime, favoured by stars such as Jennifer Lopez, was publicly criticised.
Dr Dukan, who faces a courtroom showdown with Dr Jean-Michel Cohen, was also criticised in a major study released yesterday that states his four-stage diet is an ineffective health hazard.
Dr Dukan's diet is used by celebrities including Katherine Jenkins and Gisele Bundchen. Kate Middleton's mother Carole said she used it to shape up for the royal wedding. The protein-based diet urges against counting calories, instead allowing dieters to eat as much as they like from a limited list of foodstuffs.
Conversely, Dr Cohen's diet says users can eat anything they like providing they stick to one of four programmes of up to 1,600 calories a day.
At stake is €15,000 in damages, but many millions of euro more in book royalties and profits from spin-offs.
More than 600,000 copies of Dr Dukan's book 'Je Ne Sais Pas Maigrir' (I don't know how to diet) were sold in France last year. (©Daily Telegraph, London)
