Cowell helping hide money for tycoon, court told
SIMON Cowell is among wealthy people helping a property tycoon hide his money, an estranged wife alleged at the High Court yesterday.
Michelle Young is seeking maintenance for herself and two teenage daughters from businessman Scot Young, who says he is broke. In what has been described as the biggest divorce case in British legal history, Mrs Young told the judge at London's High Court that her husband was worth £2bn (€2.7bn), but business friends and associates were helping him keep his assets secret.
When Mrs Young began to name famous names, the judge warned her: "You have to be careful when you make serious allegations that well-known people have been involved in some kind of criminal conspiracy. Do you understand that?"
Mrs Young said from the witness box: "Absolutely, my lord."
When the judge asked whether she was suggesting those named were intending "to pervert and defeat the course of justice", Mrs Young replied: "Yes."
When the judge asked her to confirm she was referring to Simon Cowell from the 'X Factor' and 'American Idol', Mrs Young said her husband was "a secret major shareholder" in 'American Idol'.
Michelle and Scot Young, both in their late forties, were married in 1995. They separated in 2006. Yesterday's hearing was set up to establish what has happened to Mr Young's fortune.
