Couple convicted of neglect as infant died with 70 injuries

A mother and father have been convicted of child neglect after their one-year-old daughter died with 70 separate injuries, police said.

The parents, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will be sentenced next year following the trial at Woolwich Crown Court.

The defendants - a 43-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman - denied they had neglected the child.

The trial heard were arrested at an address in Bracondale Road, near Belvedere, south London, in February last year after emergency services were called to the scene by the father.

The girl - aged 13 months - was not responsive and was transported to a south London hospital but pronounced dead later that day, Metropolitan Police said.

A post-mortem examination was carried out at Great Ormond Street Hospital and revealed that the child suffered 70 separate fractures on her body. A doctor examining the young child found injuries to her ribs, legs, arms and shoulder, police said.

Both parents were arrested but refused to answer any questions about their child's injuries during interview.

Police said the mother had taken the child to see a doctor but had never mentioned the injuries - despite speaking to friends about the child suffering from pain when she tried to move her arm or shoulder.

The couple, who were remanded into custody, will be sentenced in January. They cannot be named because a court order is currently in place banning the identification of a surviving sibling.
